THE ATTITUDE OF HEART
The attitude of the heart is a very important aspect in the discussion of the backslider question. Christ said in Matthew 15:19, 20 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murder, adulteries, fornication, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: These are the things which defile man. The things resulting from the heart’s attitude is what determines a man’s holiness or unholiness. It is not so much the things people do that makes them in danger of hell, but their attitude of heart. God judges a man’s heart to see if he is right or wrong, not merely his deeds. Acts 8:21 Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God. If a person has the right attitude of heart he has nothing to fear. The right attitude of heart is a complete love for God and His holiness. It is a heart of immediate repentance over any sin. Immediately, upon the act of sin, this right heart immediately repents and the blood of Christ immediately cleanseth (or blots out) the record of sin and it’s filth in the person.
In 1 John 1:7-9 John writes: But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
The person who has the wrong attitude of heart has much to fear. The wrong heart is a heart of rebellion, not repentance. This attitude is an attitude of disobedience toward God and His righteousness. Anyone who has the wrong attitude of heart and meets the judgment of God will definitely go to hell. The wrong attitude of heart refuses to use Jesus Christ as the propitiation for sins and leaves those sins on the person’s record book. The wrong attitude of heart may result in a total lose of faith resulting in apostasy. However, if the wrong attitude of heart is changed in time, through God’s chastisement (or conviction of the Holy Spirit), faith may regain its full strength.
